Facial Refreshing Mists DiY on the Cheap!
So, I was at the Dior cosmetics counter in Macy’s a few weeks ago to pick up my Capture Totale Multi-perfection Moisturizer that I was all out of and I decided to stay and play a while with the MUA! In true Amber fashion, I randomly commented on how delicious the mascara smelled. So he began sharing with me that Dior infuses rose water into many of their products for the natural and organic benefits that botanicals such as floral water provides the skin and hair, and it got me thinking!
For centuries floral water has been utilized for everything from home remedies, skin and hair care, fragrance, to food flavoring. Speaking more towards floral waters and their beauty benefits, they regulate the pH value and the acid mantle of the skin. They also hydrate, tone, and restore balance by preparing it for absorbing lipids.
Now I am a product junkie and love several of the refresher mists that are on the market such as Benefit’s Ultra-Radiance Facial Rehydrating Mist (retail $26.00), and Pangea Organics Italian Green Mandarian and Sweet Lime Toner (retail $26.00). While I have purchased these products and love them, I thought why not save a bit of money and use floral water in its place and put the extra money towards another beauty item that I am lemming (and probably don’t need)!
Without further ado, here is the quick and dirty on three common floral waters that are out there and their benefits:
Rose water is perfect for all skin types as it softens facial lines in mature skin, rejuvenates tired looking skin, tones and balances oily skin, soothes sensitive skin, cleanses normal skin, and moisturizes dry skin. Rose water can also be used as a refreshing body fragrance spray!
Lavender Floral Water
Lavender water is also perfect for all skin types as it tones and stimulates cell regeneration, soothes irritations and reduces inflammation. Lavender floral water also has purifying qualities that make it quite effective while using as a natural cleansing toner for normal to oily skin types. Additionally it also contains antiseptic properties that offer a healing effect by soothing problem skin. On a side note Lavender has also been greatly effective for its aromatherapy calming and balancing attributes that can assist in relieving headaches or nervous tension.
Orange Blossom Water
Orange Blossom Floral Water is especially beneficial for oily and sensitive skin, as it helps promote collagen production and encourages the replacement of old cells. Another fantastic property of orange blossom floral water is that it stimulates circulation to reduce puffiness and relieve swelling. Additionally its astringent properties help to help soothe acne, redness and irritations while purifying the complexion and it stimulates the circulation of lymphatic fluid.
When I first decided to use floral water I had no idea where to purchase it from as there are many places that sell so called floral water that is artificially made rather than by real roses, which obviously would have no value to your skin whatsoever except making it smell “Purdy”. I also wanted to make sure that the floral water that I purchased was certified organic, meaning that there were absolutely ZERO pesticides used on the roses harvested. Can you image having a pesticide spray on your face, YIKES!
I first checked out my local health/vitamin store and they had organic floral waters stocked. I paid $3.99 for a 4oz bottle of Organic Rose Water (I loved the size for my purse). I also purchased the 8oz bottle for $8 to refill the smaller bottle with when I needed to. How great is that! I love saving money, but I especially love the fact that I am putting 100% organic products on my face! I have also used it for refreshing my perfume on a hot day when I was in a pinch! Now most times floral water is not sold in a spray bottle but you can purchase an inexpensive spray bottle from Target or your local Drug Store to put the floral water into.
I have also been told that many ethnic supermarkets carry floral water as well, but I do not have one near me unfortunately. So as an alternative to those of you that might not have access to a shop like that you can check out Heritage Products as this is the brand that I was able to pick up at my local health store. Their floral waters are 100% Certified Organic, and they sell their floral waters in atomizer (spray) bottles on their website as well.
Now there are other ways to utilize floral waters as astringents/cleaners that require the simple addition of a few drops essential oil to the floral water, however for the moment I am just discussing the use of floral waters as refreshing mists and light toners. If nothing else try it out and save yourself a few bucks, it has really been lovely for me!
